Introduction:
Insects are, by far, the most diverse group of animals on earth with
some 30,000 species known from Texas alone. They come in a miriad of
shapes and sizes with a remarkable diversity of life histories to boot!
Valerie Bugh and Mike Quinn will take class participants on a
fascinating and informal journey of exploration and understanding into
the world of Central Texas insects.
Content:
- an overview of the insect orders and major families, including ID and life histories
- an overview of the entomologically-significant popular and technical literature and websites
- a discussion and demonstration of insect identification methods
- a discussion and demonstration of photographic techniques
- a discussion and demonstration of insect finding, collecting and curating techniques
- Sample of insects found at Hornsby Bend
Location: Center for Environmental Research (CER) at Hornsby Bend (just past the airport in southeast Austin)

entomologists, lecturers, photographers, and web designers. They have
given many short courses on a wide variety of insect topics across
Texas. Both maintain information-rich insect websites and have a
combined 30-plus years of entomological experience between them.
